For dinner tonight, it’s three girls and me, so vegetarian seems the best way to go. I don’t know why that is exactly but I know from experience not to serve red meat to girls.
I headed to Eataly on Twenty-Third Street and Fifth Avenue for the freshest, prettiest vegetables and fruits I could find. I bought all organic so that Jill and our friends won’t have to worry about any pollutants or chemicals sticking to their dinner.
I found a jar of beautiful capers packed in salt; I picked up some healthy farro whole grain pasta, so that girls will get their protein. It’ll be a healthy, happy dinner for us and for the planet.
As I was going through the checkout at Eataly, I looked at my watch, which read exactly 11:30. A small electric vibration ran through my body. Eataly’s rotisserie counter opens at 11:30.
I sprinted for the back of the store, where I was first in line. I ordered my prime rib sandwich to go and watched as the counterman generously sliced the porcini-rubbed rare prime rib onto a just-baked roll; a little salt, a little pepper and that’s all there is, folks.
I ferried the sandwich across Broadway to a bench in Madison Square Park, which is an exquisite, expansive island of shaded civility in the midst of New York’s chaos. I unwrapped my treasure and scarfed it down as I watched the passing parade. Don’t tell the girls.

About Michael Tucker
I’ve been an actor for about forty years and a writer for half as many. I have worked in theater, TV and movies - in New York, California and many points in between. I’m married to the actress Jill Eikenberry – thirty-eight years this June – and we now divide our time between New York and Italy, where we have a house nestled among the olive trees in Umbria. I’ve written three books, all of which have food and drink prominently involved. The first is “I Never Forget a Meal” which explains itself; “Living In a Foreign Language” about our house in Italy; and “Family Meals”, a book about how our family turned into Italians around the crisis of Jill’s mother’s decline into dementia. There’s a lot of food in that one, too.-

The girls enjoyed that dinner tremendously. Especially the company…

When I read your blog…my mouth waters…I laugh and then get really hungry..I’m compelled to go cook something…thx…I think.
Yum! Re your photo of the veggie girls: Have you seen the cartoon where some people are being pursued by zombies, and they’re yelling “We’re vegans!!”? ;-)
You don’t know me, but I’m Anna’s mother and Robyn’s mother-in-law. Robyn connected me to your website
I’m sure your dinner was fabulous (without meat). Fresh vegetables and pasta cooked by an expert can be totally delicious and satisfying, but I would have preferred lunch (the sandwich looked fabulous). Actually I’ve had one of their sandwiches, and will definitely return for another. I worry about cholesterol and cancer and getting run over by a crazy cyclist, but what can I say, I’m a risk taker. Tonight I’m having lamb stew with green beans Greek style (see I eat vegetables).
Loved your book about Annie, I bonded with your characters (couldn’t put it down).
Keep up the hunt for more good food, and by the way you introduced me to “Milk” and their pork bun, thanks for turning me on to that deliciousness.
Best wishes for your future endeavors.

I’m off to Eataly for that sandwich post-haste. I agree with Joseph – your blogs always make me hungry!
OMG Michael and Dianna…foodies…you have alot in common. And I love you both!!
I salute you, Chef Tucker!
